Tone and awareness both needed
The race for the Republican nomination is now clearly between Gingrich and Romney; other candidates still in the race are largely ignored. Tonality has swung back and forth between the two candidates based on primary results and expectations of the future. Gingrich has not been able to take advantage of higher visibility.
Basis: 1,791 statements on Gingrich and 2,231 on Romney in ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX news stories, 1-27 January 2012
Inconsistent coverage creates risk
While overall volume for Romney has been high during January, coverage levels have been inconsistent and negativity has been significant. This inconsistent volume reduced his visibility going into the South Carolina primary, likely contributing to his loss in the state.
